This week started with the announcement in our country of general elections (Feb. 7 2008) and a referendum. As in any country this is a historical marker and thus of dire importance.
In August of 1998, I predicted a UDP victory for these elections of 2008. How could I possibly do that? Well I have characterized our Belizeans as immature and illogical and unsatisfiable and disrespectful. This is so not in our totality but, sad to say, in the majority. It MIGHT be a good thing in our lil democracy but for the wrong reasons.
We have instilled in our system a cultural/societal as opposed to institutional or enacted term limitation. Again, we do it with an unsavory taste.
Of course, we will change again in 2013. In 2003 the opposition party was simply overwhelmed by too large a majority by the ruling party whose campaigning made it very improbable to surmount...so then they made it to 2008. In 2003, the opposition did not help by fielding similar people as they did in their cataclysmic landslide of 1998.
I pray for the best for our country, since it seems that with a similar slate again the opposition will be voted in by the electorate. This may not be good for Belize as they are coming in with more ire than fervor with more vindictiveness than conviction. For successful development, countries need to be ruled with passion and desire to do good and not with anxiety to do better than who was there before. Much less should there be anger at alleged improprieties...believe that. Anger creates ulcers in society; it does not uplift.
